Have you ever wished your shopping cart platform could allow you to create unique rules for special circumstances? iGlobal Stores’ custom rules engine gives you full control over the different situations that arise when selling cross-border from restricting items to individual countries, limiting items purchased per order, or adding a shipping buffer to the shipping cost for particular countries.
Decoding Custom Rules
iGlobal Stores’ rules engine can help you customize your cross-border checkout based on the needs of your particular store. Here are some possibilities and examples of the most commonly used rules.
Do you have items that can’t import into the UK? No problem! With the iGlobal Stores’ rules engine, you can have custom rules added to your store to restrict by item, country, even provinces or states, or any combination of the former. You can also set up restrictions on shipping types. For example, if you have a product that can’t ship to Canada unless you ship it UPS Worldwide Expedited, we can turn off all other shipping options when that item is in the cart, and Canada is selected as the ship to country.
Add to shipping costs for particular regions/countries
Sometimes your cost associated with shipping to a specific country is greater because of theft, lost packages, etc. The iGlobal Stores’ rules engine can be used to add a buffer to the shipping charged to particular countries to keep shipping to that country viable. Another option would be to turn off non-trackable methods
Special shipping circumstances
You may want to offer free or discounted shipping to a particular country with a custom rule. Here are a few examples of ways to customize your transportation rates:
- Free shipping on orders over $100
- Free shipping to Canada
Sometimes you need to restrict an entire category of items for your website. We can do this by using your platform’s category system, or by adding a rule that restricts keywords from your checkout. For example, you can restrict any items that contain Lithium, are made of leather, or an entire category of motorcycle oils.
A buffer can be added to your duty/tax quote. This can protect you from unexpected costs and help cover the cost of lost or stolen packages.
There is not a way to set up tiered shipping via the iGlobal Stores Platform at the moment, but it can be set up with our rules engine.
You can turn on the option to use purchase orders in the checkout based on a customers email, address, etc.
Add custom messages to your checkout based on country, items, etc.
Flat rate shipping
Add a flat rate shipping cost based on country or order total.
Turn shipping profiles off/on depending on items in the cart.
If you sell an item like a car bumper and need to offer a specific shipping method like LTL to Canada, a custom rule can cover that.
Real life examples
A wine seller that can only ship a specific wine to select provinces in Canada, and only with one UPS service level can use a custom rule to meet this need. If these items are in the cart and are not allowed for import to that province, iGlobal Stores will remove the restricted item and message the shopper accordingly. If the destination is allowed, but UPS will only ship wine “UPS Expedited” to Canada, then the “UPS Expedited” service level will be the exclusive shipping method at the checkout.
A merchant has a custom rule set up to that if items are a certain brand, charge duty when sold into Canada because they are not made in US, CA or MX. Meaning these items are exempt from NAFTA.
iGlobal Stores Checkout Experience
In many instances, adding custom rules will not affect your customer’s experience at all. If there is a restricted item, the customer will see a message letting them know that the product has been removed from their cart because to their country or region restricts it for import.
If you need your checkout to do something that you don’t have the ability to setup yourself in the iGlobal Stores’ Platform, it is likely that you need a custom rule. To get a custom rule set up for your checkout, you will need to reach out to your iGlobal Stores’ account representative.
